What’s UP?!: TOP FIVE Ways to “Fablitize” Your Ceilings
Ceilings are generally one of the most overlooked locations in most homes. However, a blank ceiling provides the perfect opportunity to add extra detailing and interest to any space. Whenever feasible, I try to include ceiling treatments in the homes of my interior design clients.
There are many ways to “fablitize” your ceilings. Some of them are all about the original architectural design, but many of them can be added after a home has been built. So, don’t worry…. If your home wasn’t “born” with fabulous ceilings, it is always possible to make changes in the design at a later time.
#1 – COFFERED CEILINGS
For anyone who is not familiar with the term, a coffered ceiling is one that consists of recessed panels, usually trimmed with ornamental motifs. Coffered ceilings generally add a touch of formality and sophistication to a space.
#2 – PAINT and WALLPAPER
As most of you probably know by now, I am currently working on the redesign of my own home. In that design plan, ceiling treatments are included in some of the rooms. My foyer, as I have shown you in a photo already, has beautiful hand-painted ceilings that truly compliment the artwork on the walls. Wallpaper is also another interesting way to highlight your ceilings.
#3 – EXPOSED BEAMS
Exposed beams, especially those that are antique or recovered from an older home, add a lovely sense of history to any space.
# 4 – BARREL VAULT and CURVED
A barrel vault is , perhaps, one of the least commonly seen ceiling designs, because of its complexity and pricing. However, whenever one is present in a home it is almost impossible not to acknowledge it. In fact, any type of curved ceiling is certainly an impressive attribute.
#5 – BEADBOARD
Adding texture and/or color to a ceiling through the use of beadboard provides a feeling of coziness and warmth to any space.
