What Makes a Home Romantic?

I was recently interviewed for a national magazine and asked me how I make my home feel romantic.   Seeing that this is Valentines Day week, I thought it was a perfect time to share thoughts around my answer.

Romance, in my opinion, is about the many facets of your personality and how your are able to articulate that through design.  If someone can walk into your home and immediately feel a connection to you through your sense of style (whether they are drawn to your style or not) to me, that connection is a little romantic!

Being a business owner, a mother and a wife – I can really spend day after day with my ear to the grindstone.  I work long hours in the office and on site with clients, care for my family, my three dogs and by the time there is some space in there for “me”, well, I’ll be honest and say that there are many days/weeks when I feel I get lost in the hustle and bustle of life.  I am sure you other mothers out there can relate!

I have a very feminine and romantic side to my personality, so when designing my home, I used my “home landscape” if you will as a reminder of who I am.  So, after those long, tough days, I can walk into my house and my personality shines back to me as if to gently hug my tired heart and re-light the flame that keeps me going each and every day.

I love candles and burn them non-stop.  We sell my favorite candle brand, Aquiesse, at Knotting Hill Interiors, and their Pink Peony fragrance is perfect for this special week of love!

I love books and cannot get enough of them.  I like to stack my favorite design books in my office, fashion books in my vanity, cookbooks in the kitchen and of course, my new book, Secrets of Southern Design right front and center on my coffee table! (which is now available on Amazon!!)

I love little whimsical sayings that are inspirations, clever and speak to my soul. I like to tuck them in any open spot.  There is nothing like opening up one of my many books or looking at my planner and just as I am about to get overwhelmed at the through of meetings booked back to back to back – and see a hand written note to myself with a quote I found that inspires me to remember how passionate I am about living a life that is created by me.

I’d love to know how you bring romance into your own life through the design of your home. Do you love fresh flowers?  Perhaps always having something baking in your kitchen makes you feel at home.  A crackling fire and big, soft cashmere throws are the epitome of romance for some (especially during these cold winter nights!).  Leave me a comment and let me know!
