Secrets of Southern Design – Sleeping in Southern Comfort with Color!
Bedrooms… What dreams are made of!
As a designer who is quintessentially southern, I am always looking to how a room “feels” and making sure within the myriad of adjectives one can use to describe a room, that “comfort” is always one of them. We want to take that relaxed yet attentive drawl of southern hospitality not only into our manners and food but also into our foyers, kitchens and, for me, most importantly, our bedrooms.
I am a designer who prefers soft color schemes in the bedroom. Unusual yes, but jumping with color, no! Some of my new favorite schemes include a master bedroom that I just designed for myself. I work in color all day long and when “ I lay me down to sleep”, I need comfort in almost no color at all. Soft taupey walls provide a neutral background that is anything but boring. Paired with a “blush” colored ceiling, this haven has miles of taupey velvet fabric that also includes a room full of many details in both texture and interest. When going colorless, it is important to bring in textures. A snake skinned fabric sofa, velvet, boucle on the bed and little French chairs upholstered in blush toile blend beautifully for a restful retreat that is easy on color and easy on my sweet dreams.
Soft blues are also nice for bedrooms and many a room that I have created boasts a color scheme that includes blue and aqua’s.
