Secrets of Southern Design – Details, Details, Details!
“Beauty is an accumulation of details, the kind of layering that takes a long time.”
Paying attention to the smallest of details is all part of a southerner’s upbringing and training in hospitality. We truly care about our guests’ experience in our homes. We want them to feel surrounded and embraced the the genteel elegance that characterizes the South, from our choice of wall color right down to the antique place card holders on our table.
Beautiful fabrics, tassels and trim and attention to details are a mainstay of good southern design. Historically, the South has been equated with textiles because many textile mills graced the region until textile production went overseas. Still, one of the greatest tools int he southern design bag is textiles.
I personally love classic drapery that does not have to be changes when the mood of a room changes. Drapery can be expensive, so I think it is best that it remain a constant in a home. It is easy to change paint colors, pillows, and accessories. It can be a bit overwhelming to change up draperies with each season!
In my book, Secrets of Southern Design, I go into detail about different types of draperies and show before and after photos of a drapery installation in my own home! I just love honing in on the smallest of details on draperies and found several photos that show everything from tassels to trim that can give you a small idea of how far you can go with details!
