Luxury Interior Designer Gets Inspired by Emerald in Art and Fashion

As the rest of the world rang in 2013, the design community celebrated the Pantone’s grand reveal of the Color of the Year.  Emerald. I wrote about it a few weeks ago  on my blog.   As I begin to incorporate Emerald into my design palate – I wanted to share that I don’t always look to how other “interior designers” are using the color for inspiration.  That may be a part of it – but to get my creative juices flowing I love to leave the world of interior design and look to nature, fashion and art.  From here I can begin to see a room take shape, and it usually lends itself to be a more authentic expression of design than if I found my inspiration from my colleagues – although when I am in a pinch or stuck with details, my design team here at Knotting Hill Interiors does an amazing job of reminding me that “it is not brain surgery” and helps me to step back and look at the bigger picture.

Onto the elegant Emerald.  Emerald the gemstones are fascinating. They have the most beautiful, most intense and most radiant green that can possibly be imagined: emerald green. In top quality, fine emeralds are even more valuable than diamonds. For me – to think about incorporating Emerald into a room that is inspired from the emerald gem, this would be very rich and elegant in design and character.

Emeralds are a girls best friend!

I love art in all forms. Gaining inspiration from the inspired is truly a wonderful gift.  As a designer, I use art for so much more than finding the perfect piece to hang in your foyer.  When I am putting together a palate for a room or home, looking at how artists use color and texture in their paintings, photographs and even architecture can lend to part of the story of a room. What do you see in the pictures below?

For those of you that read my blog, you know how I love Paris! What a statement this wall is – maybe in the kitchen or dining room? Just one wall – with a bold emerald green.

This “Frida inspired” photograph of the famous mexican artist really shows how emerald green can be part of a true rich rainbow of colors – and it works! I can see an amazing spanish style kitchen with colorful mosiac tile work on the floors and above the range.

One of my favorite places to find inspiration would have to be from the world of fashion. Being a bit of a fashionista myself, I take a lot of pride in looking my best – so naturally, I want the spaces I live in to reflect that. If I begin with what my client feels comfortable wearing every day – that is a great starting point to design a space they will feel comfortable living in.

How fabulous are these! AND – what an amazing color story for your vanity area/wardrobe!

Love everything about this – I may have to build an addition to my home just to incorporate this look! I have found with some of my clients who have multiple guest bedrooms and bathrooms – we can have a lot of fun in these rooms and create “themes” for them. You could have the “Peacock Room” – a guest bedroom where you incorporate colors and actually images, feathers, etc., tastefully into the design of the room.

Just in case you needed some more inspiration for your Peacock Room. 🙂

Great warm colors for a TV Room or Den!

There are a multitude of ways you can incorporate Emerald into your home – and the beautiful thing about Emerald is that it truly is a timeless color. It’s classic virtues will never go out of style and in my book, that gets the grade of FABULOUS!
