From the KHI Retail Studios – A Different Way to Do Chairs
If you are truly looking for an amazing designer, visit their home. If you are blown away ’round every corner, then you know you have found the “perfect” person for you.
That is how I felt the first time I walked into Kimberly’s house. I felt as if I was walking into an enchanted “southern” fairy tale. I knew right then and there that she was the person I wanted to work with and learn from. One of those “take your breath away” moments for me came when I walked into her kitchen and saw her chairs. A kitchen chair taking your breath away? Hey, fabrics are my life… so when I see someone taking the endless possibilities with fabric to another level, as an artist, it is so exciting!
See what I mean?
She has this incredibly comfortable yet beautiful and happy kitchen space. Now back to the chairs. As you can see even from this photo, we have a solid color leather upholstered chair, with handmade chair covers in an amazing fabric. She used a classic nail head around the seat backing of their chair. Just wait, it gets better…
I think it was really the back of these chairs that did it for me. I love how versatile these chairs now become with the removable skirts and seeing the fabric pattern again on the back.
All of a sudden, you not only have a fabulous chair by itself, but you now have created a very fun option with the chair covers. And, as you can see from the first image – she went with a completely different style chair and fabric for the two chairs at the head of the table. And, it all works and looks stunning. This is truly the result you get when you work with a team who can make suggestions and recommendations to you for your home that you may have never even thought possible.
Remember – when thinking chairs…
– Use multiple fabrics
– Have fun with paint colors and textures
– Add flared or box pleated skirts
– Be creative with different types of trims, decorative cording or nail head trims
– Every chair at the table does not have to look the same!
These are just some simple suggestions to how you can make a big change to your chairs whether you have one chair or twelve!
“I think that is what makes southern design so special. It is about creating a feeling of connection to your grandmothers front porch. It is about tassels and wing chairs and blue and white china handed down from generation to generation.” – Guest Blogger – Mark Jones, “King of Fabrics”, Knotting Hill Retail & Design Studios
